An orange tide

Aside from some shambolic kicking, Saturday night was a nice evening to be a Clemson fan.

As I settled into my recliner to watch on DVR at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday after returning home from work, I was ready for disappointment.

I’ve seen this movie before.

Clemson takes the field, its destiny in its own hands, and proceeds to lay a big, fat egg.

As the Seminoles stormed ahead 17-6, my fears seemed to be coming to pass.

Instead, C.J. Spiller added a few lines to his blooming Heisman Trophy resume and the Tigers rallied to thump FSU, sending the ‘Noles and coach Bobby Bowden into an even deeper tailspin.

Here’s what we learned:

Spiller in the running

You have to consider Spiller for the Heisman now. Couple his eye-popping numbers – 312 all-purpose yards against FSU – with the facts that the pre-season contenders (Tebow, McCoy and Bradford) haven’t lived up to their billing, and the senior running back has an outside shot at winning the award.

FSU is a mess

How can a team with the talent of FSU get pushed all over the field like that? I don’t really have a dog in that fight, but the Seminoles have the look of a program that’s gone stale.

Almost a believer

I don’t know if I can use this game to declare Clemson ready to claim its first ACC crown since 1991. Is Florida State that bad, or have the Tigers turned a corner?

Stay tuned…
