Halfway through the Hex

World Cup logoWith last night’s games, we’re halfway through the Hexagonal in CONCACAF and well on the way to determining which teams from North America, Central America and the Carribean will be playing in the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

Last night, Mexico clipped Trinidad and Tobago, 2-1, at the Azteca and Honduras blanked El Salvador, 1-0.

So, with five of the 10 games in the books for each team, here’s the table.

Remember that the top three teams automatically earn a spot in South Africa while the fourth-place team gets to play a home-and-home with the fifth-place team from South America for another spot.

The next round of games is Aug. 12, so let’s look at each team’s prospects going forward:

Costa Rica

Remaining games: at Honduras, Mexico, at El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago, at USA

Skinny: Even with three road games remaining, Costa Rica looks to be in prime position to snare a berth.

United States

Remaining games: at Mexico, El Salvador, at Trinidad and Tobago, at Honduras, Costa Rica

Skinny:With the Confederations Cup and the Gold Cup to think about, the biggest game on the calendar for many fans is the trip to Azteca on Aug. 12. And that last match against Costa Rica could be for the top spot in CONCACAF.

Remaining games: Costa Rica, T&T, at Mexico, USA, at El Salvador

Skinny: A win over Costa Rica on Aug. 12 would throw the standings in a tizzy. Their home form has been solid, and if it continues to be, they’ll be in the hunt.

Remaining games: USA, at Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, at T&T

Skinny: Rumors of El Tri’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. The Mexicans have their fate in their own hands, hosting the Americans in August and then playing the other two teams ahead of them in rapid succession. I see them going through as a top-three side.

El Salvador

Remaining games: at T&T, at USA, Costa Rica, at Mexico, Honduras

Skinny: A brutal finish, including two of the toughest road trips in the region, will probably prove too much for a team that’s overachieved a bit so far.

Trinidad and Tobago

Remaining games: El Salvador, at Honduras, USA, at Costa Rica, Mexico

Skinny: The Soca Warriors are bringing up the rear, with just two points in five matches. Even if they pull an upset against the U.S. or Mexico in Port of Spain or Bacolet, it won’t likely be enough.

I know this isn’t the correct place for it but I wasn’t sure you’d see it anywhere else. I just read that Real Madrid gave Man U $131 million for the rights to Ronaldo.

Yeah, apparantly there isn’t an economic downturn going on in Spain…
