Jata still fighting for roster spot

Jata picked by Fire

When Campbell midfielder Richard Jata was selected in the final round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft back in January, I sort of had the feeling that him making the final roster might be a challenge.

Turns out, I was right.

His blog (official or unofficial, I’m not sure) is reporting that he’s still in a fight for one of the last remaining roster spots with the MLS side ahead of next week’s season opener.

There’s some intrigue as to whether the Fire will carry two or three goalkeepers, which would determine how many outfield players the Fire want to hang on to.

It’s worth pointing out that the former Camel is featured on MLSnet.com’s Rookie Life: Diary of a Draft Pick, so he’s turned enough heads to earn that distinction.

He is with the team in Arizona as it prepares to meet the L.A. Galaxy in its final preseason tuneup on Saturday.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed…
