Playing the waiting game

The Campbell University men’s soccer team had a great regular season. For the first 135 minutes of game action, they had a great Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

A bad 45 minutes in a 4-3 loss Saturday to Jacksonville in the title game means that the Camels’ postseason fate, if they indeed have one, will be revealed today on ESPNEWS at 5:30.

So, what are their chances of getting into the 48-team field? Let’s break it down:

Automatic bids (22)

Boston University (America East), Maryland (ACC), Jacksonville (A-Sun), Dayton (A-10), South Florida (Big East), Winthrop (Big South), Michigan State (Big Ten), UC Irvine (Big West), George Mason (Colonial Athletic), Tulsa (C-USA), Loyola (Horizon), Penn (Ivy), Fairfield (MAAC), Akron (MAC), Creighton (MVC), Denver (MPSF), Farleigh Dickinson (NEC), UCLA (PAC 10), Colgate (Patriot), UNC Greensboro (Southern), UM Kansas City (Summit) and San Francisco (WCC)

That leaves 26 spots left for teams that didn’t win their conference tournaments. The most-recent RPI release was a week ago, so I don’t know how much these have changed over the last week.

Here is the list, with the teams who got automatic bids removed.

1. Wake Forest 17-0-1
2. St. John’s (N.Y.) 15-1-3
3. Indiana 10-5-3
6. Michigan 12-4-2
7. Loyola (Md.) 17-0-1
8. Notre Dame 12-5-2
9. UC Santa Barbara 10-5-4
11. North Carolina 11-6-1
12. Northwestern 12-3-2
13. Louisville 11-7-2
15. UC Davis 12-3-4
17. Duke 10-6-2
18. Virginia 9-7-1
19. Drake 13-4-0
20. Boston College 8-7-2
21. Dartmouth 10-5-1
22. California 9-3-5
25. Harvard 11-4-0
26. Ill.-Chicago 12-2-4
27. Connecticut 9-4-6
29. Oakland 13-4-0
30. William & Mary 10-5-3
32. Buffalo 11-3-4
33. Ohio St. 9-7-2
34. Massachusetts 9-6-3
35. St. Louis 10-3-5
36. Wisconsin 9-7-2
37. Syracuse 8-6-3
38. Campbell 13-5-0

My math skills tell me that the Camels are squarely on the bubble to get in as an at-large team. I’m hoping they get a shot…

    Randy,
Wish this had come true, but we were on the wrong side of the bubble. Sorry for the seniors, especially A.J., but they’ve accomplished so much in 4 years.
Thanks for the coverage. Looking forward to watching many more games with you.
    See you soon.
    Stan
